she was suddenly taken from the hospital by her parents. even though she still had a catheter in her heart. doctors are now saying her life is most definitely in danger. they want to find her right away. and on a much lighter note, we unleashed cameron mathison on the red carpet overnight for a pre-oscar event. where he got some unsolicited grooming advice from richard gere. we'll tell you what gere advised coming up. but we'll start in kansas city where the linebacker jovan belcher was supposed to take the field for the chiefs, but that's not going to happen. police said that he killed his girlfriend on saturday. and then killed himself in front of his coach. caught in the middle here the most innocent conceivable victim, the couple's 3-month-old baby girl. abc's john schriffen is inside arrowhead stadium where today's game will still be played. >> reporter: dan, good morning. this morning, we're learning more about what may have happened in the hours leading up to this tragedy. according to the kansas city

star, it all started 1:00 saturday morning when belcher's girlfriend got home late from a concert that she attended with friends. well, tragically, it ended seven hours later. when belcher shot her several times, and he then drove to the chiefs stadium where he then took his own life. this morning, investigators are trying to figure out why nfl linebacker jovan belcher killed his 22-year-old girlfriend and then took his own life. >> we heard that they had been arguing in the past. as far as recently, they had been arguing before the shooting occurred. >> reporter: police say saturday morning he shot and killed kasandra perkins, the mother of his 3-month-old daughter at their home. police say belcher's own mother was in the house, saw the murder and called 911. he then jumped in his car and drove to arrowhead stadium to the team's practice facility. with a gun held to his head in the parking lot, authorities say, he began talking to coaches. >> when he pulled up --

he was was -- they were never in danger. he never threatened them. they talked for a little bit. >> reporter: suddenly he walked away, taking his own life as the chiefs head coach and the general manager witnessed in horror. the kansas city chiefs released a statement saying, quote, the entire chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the family and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. >> jovan belcher had an opportunity! >> reporter: at just 25 years old, belcher seemed like he had the world in his powerful hands. as a starting linebacker he reportedly earned millions in the nfl, living the good life. driving a bentley. seen here, being towed away after the crime. >> he always seemed like a nice guy. never suspect anything like this would happen. >> reporter: the question now, what caused the long island, new york, native to snap? belcher had no prior record of domestic abuse, but had been on and off again with his

girlfriend for the past three years. >> shocking. shocking. the child has lost both parents. >> reporter: and the 3-month-old child is reportedly doing well, staying with belcher's mom. as for the game today being played right here at arrowhead stadium, the chiefs consulted with the nfl and decided to go ahead and play against the carolina panthers as scheduled. many are hoping this game will serve as a way to bring this reeling community together. >> such a tragedy. we'll turn now to round three of the nasty weather trifecta out west. with an onslaught of rain, wind and potential flooding. ginger zee is here with the details. ginger, you're saying that this is not over? >> no, not even close. this has been going on for the better part of this week. we can look at how much we have already had. over a foot of rain in some northern california areas, brandy creek, whispering pines. even parts of oregon 8.77 inches already. we're about to get more. look at the video they were

preparing in napa. you can see that the russian river is forecast to crest today. flooding is the first issue. then, winds. reno, nevada, big problems on the roadway. high-profile vehicles traveling get a 70 miles per hour gust, it guz done. some of the mountain passes in the sierras could easily see 100-plus mile-per-hour winds today. the first threat is rain, we're talking about flooding. how much more rain? anywhere from 4 to 8 inches. you can see right here in the red area, reno is involved. redding is in the purple. and this, even though same colors used here, the wind gusts, look at how south, it goes to los angeles, great falls, montana. lot of places not only just talking about that but the snow. and the snow, the snow levels have come down, starting to see a little bit more of that freezing. sun valley, jackson hole and mount baker, all going to get in that foot area. that's some good news. after today, you get a break

tomorrow and storm number four, if you can believe it or not, not that strong, but it's going to hit on tuesday. a look at the nation's weather in a couple of minutes now back to dan and bianna. >> storm number four. >> last thing they need. lot of other news developing overnight. as always, we turn to mr. ron claiborne. >> good morning, everyone. u.s. forces in afghanistan have helped repel an attack on a joint u.s./afghan base. taliban suicide bombers assaulted the jalalabad early this morning. detonating two vehicles packed with explosives and striking a gun battle that lasted two hours. all of the attackers were killed. two civilians were also killed. four afghan troupes were also killed. no u.s. troops were injured. and new details this morning on that deadly bus crash at miami international airport. two people were killed when a religious group's bus slammed into an eight-foot-high overpass because the driver took a wrong turn. mark greenblatt is here with the latest details. >> reporter: good morning, ron. as many as three people are clinging to life this morning after that crash in miami.

just one of thousands of bus crashes that we found happening every year in the u.s., leaving a long trail of injuries and worse. >> just very bloody. everybody had cuts and scrapes. >> reporter: the entire front of this bus, caved in and the ceiling collapsed, injuring more than 30 and killing one 56-year-old and another 86-year-old senior citizen. the driver got lost and somehow ended up at miami international airport, plowing his bus straight through this concrete overpass. >> we're not sure why he misjudged the terminal building. he didn't know where he was going. >> reporter: at a nearby hospital, one injured person after the next got rushed in on gurneys, and across america it's a scene that tragically plays out time and again. abc news discovered, on average, well over 200 fatal bus crashes take place every year in the u.s., with more than 12,000 nonfatal crashes. and more than 15,000 people injured.

just last week, a 6-year-old boy died when a bus crashed into the long island home where the boy was asleep in bed. and in july, a tour bus crashed into this barrier outside of new rochelle, new york. with the bus going too fast for the slick roads. injuring all 24 people on board. back in miami, it turns out that the driver here, even mowed down a sign warning vehicles more than 8 feet tall to turn around. police say they don't know whether they'll file charges against that driver. his bus belongs to the miami bus service. a company that we found had three violations last year related to driver fatigue. ron, it's too early to tell if that played any role in this crash. a frightening scene this morning on a highway in japan where at least three people were killed when part of a tunnel collapsed outside of tokyo. the company that operates that highway, ceiling plates made of concrete fell on cars. the smoke from a fire initially

made it impossible for rescue workers to get inside the tunnel. the tunnel is 35 years old but was just inspected a month ago. police in san diego are searching for two men caught on tape, caught allegedly stealing, hundreds of pairs of underwear from a victoria's secret. you can see one of the suspects is holding a shopping bag. the other dropping in handfuls of underwear. underwear estimated 4,000 bucks. finally, last week we showed you that house right in the middle of a new highway in china, it seems like the owner had a change of heart. he's now agreed to accept compensation to move out and his home, now former home, as you see there, torn down. >> pretty defiant. all right, ron. he's out. >> thank you, ron. we appreciate it. >> you got it. we'll turn now to the fiscal

cliff, 30 days from an economy-crippling deadline. where everyone's taxes go up and massive spending cuts kick in. yet, talks seem to be going nowhere. treasury secretary timothy geithner will be the guest on "this week" with george stephanopoulos. george is with us now. good morning, george. >> last weekend, you sat right here and you said that you were reasonably optimistic that a deal could be afoot. in the intervening week, we have seen a lot of trash-talking from both sides, can we still be somewhat hopeful? >> this week was a rough week in these negotiations. treasury secretary geithner when he went up to capitol hill, on thursday, the senate republican leader mitch mcconnell laughed when he got the offer from tim geithner. they think it's an offer that doesn't show any rules towards compromise. house speaker john boehner said that the talks are at a stalemate. there seems to be a huge divide. democrats said they're not going to make another move until republicans clearly say they're going to go for an increase in tax rates.

republicans aren't prepared to make a move. unless the democrats are able to give up greater savings in medicare. so, this is stalemate right now. now, these things always look horrible before they come together. more and more voices say, this is going to go over the fiscal cliff at least for a few days in january. >> and democrats seem to be thinking that, if we go over the fiscal cliff, voters will likely blame the republicans for that. do you think that's true? or are democrats overplaying their hands? >> all of the polls show that right now. no one know was the consequences will really be if we go over that fiscal cliff. we know that the tax hikes go up. some estimates -- ben bernanke, the fed chairman, fears that it will throw the country into a recession. that would hurt the whole country, of course president obama as well. they have to be careful here as well. but democrats and the president clearly believe that they have the leverage to force an increase in these tax rates on the upper income americans before they agree to a deal.

>> we'll all be watching the stock market as well. if that indeed happen. the president is also concentrating on recasting his new cabinet and one name that came up yesterday is a replacement for leon panetta at the defense department. actually a republican, chuck hagel. former senator from nebraska. >> it's possible, but this is a real game of musical chairs right now. the president has to fill at least three big jobs, secretary of state, hillary clinton, defense and cia. and if the president does not choose susan rice that means john kerry goes to state and hagel goes to defense. if he chooses kerry for state then you could end up having hagel go to cia. we just don't know right now. but all of those names are in play as we talk. >> this wouldn't be his first republican secretary of defense as well. bob gates. all right, george. very interesting. >> thanks, george. and don't miss george's interview with treasury secretary geithner.

later this morning on "this week." now to the all-out search for a cancer patient in arizona, take a look at this surveillance video, it shows a young girl being taken out of the hospital by her parents. her doctors say that the girl could die if she's not found immediately. >> reporter: this morning, phoenix police still on the lookout for an 11-year-old cancer patient whose life may be in danger after her mother snatched her from the phoenix children's hospital wednesday without doctors knowing. >> yes, i'm the health supervisor at phoenix children's hospital. >> okay. >> we have a patient that has gone missing. >> reporter: the entire scene caught on hospital surveillance cameras. watch as emily, a leukemia patient, who recently had her arm amputated, who followed her mother into a hospital bathroom where her mother takes out her iv. they both walk out of the hospital. emily wearing different clothing and a wig, while her father

waits for the pair outside of the hospital and drives them away in a black minivan. the family hasn't been seen since. >> it's a danger for her to be out. >> reporter: officials warn that if her heart is exposed to infection, there could be consequences. >> she could obtain an infection and could ultimately die within a couple of days. >> reporter: police say that emily's parents could face criminal charges. if anything happens to their daughter. >> in this particular case, we have a 11-year-old girl who can't really decide for herself, her parents are now removing her from the hospital and putting her in danger. >> reporter: police fear that emily's family may be difficult to track down since they're from mexico and have no locally listed records. >> we hope that emily gets the medical attention soon. we'll shift gears now to the latest in the bizarre manhunt for a software legend in belize. caught on camera for the first

time, john mcafee is still playing hide and seek with police despite reports that he had been captured. he's been running for almost a month. he's been tweeting and blogging along the way. abc's matt gutman has the latest. >> reporter: john mcafee may be in hiding, but he's certainly not silent. >> are you afraid? >> wouldn't you be, sir? >> reporter: the increased paranoid millionaire telling cnn, the past three weeks -- >> it hasn't been a lot of fun. i miss my life. much of it has been deprivation. no baths. poor food, at least. >> reporter: even calling into the set of cnbc. >> my life has become a little bit more intense. >> reporter: and just hours after being asked this question -- >> how do you see this coming to an end? >> i don't have a crystal ball. i will continue to fight until something changes. >> reporter: rumors on his own blog that he had been captured. but police tell abc news that he has not been captured and he's not even a suspect, he's only wanted for questioning. in the november 10th murder of his neighbor, a man who filed a

local petition against mcafee shotgun-slinging security guards and his many dogs. in the interviews mcafee details an increasingly hard life on the run. he claims to be elaborately disguised, but he ventures out in public. >> i have been in public many, many times. went to buy some strawberries. >> reporter: but the only evidence of this is the goatee now in black. mcafee told abc news last month -- >> talking face to face is going to be a very difficult thing, sir, because people know that you're a reporter. you may think you're not being followed, but i can assure you you are. >> reporter: during a week in belize, we saw no evidence of that and asked whether or not he was insane. >> if i were a madman how -- how could i judge? >> reporter: hard to argue with that. for "good morning america," matt gutman, abc news, miami. >> that story continues to get more strange by the hour. let's check the forecast once again. ginger, we talked about what's going on out west. but a lot of other weather

>> whoa. >> jillian seen here innocently feeding the dolphins at the theme park's famous dolphin cove was in the middle of her second visit of the day, that's when she apparently made a crucial mistake, raising the small plate of dolphin food in the air out of excitement. the park warns people not to do that. the dolphin eager for that bait, chomps down on her arm. nearly dragging her into the water. her souvenir a set of teeth marks the size of dimes. >> hold it out like this. >> her parents are furious. claiming that seaworld employees trivialized the attack. in a statement seaworld officials said, quote -- nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our guests, employees and animals. and educators and animal care staff were at the attraction when this happened and immediately connected with the family. this is not the first time that a child has been bitten by dolphins at seaworld. similar incidents happened twice back in 2006.

still, the park hasn't said whether the park will make any changes to this attraction. as for jillian, her mom said that her wounds are still visible. what her daughter is really worried about, the dolphin may be hurt after eating the paper plate. sweet kid. >> her favorite animal. lucky she wasn't dragged into the water. all right, time for a check on the day's developing stories. back to ron. good morning, everyone. in the news, the kansas city chiefs will play their pro football game today, one day after linebacker jovan belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself. the couple leave behind a 3 month old daughter. and a fan falls from a ramp in college game, in charlotte, north carolina, the man suffered life-threatening injury after plunging 40 feet to the ground. outside of bank of america stadium. thousands of former crew members, ship builders and their families, paid tribute to the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
